While Memorial Day Weekend is only the unofficial start of summer, it’s also the general time of year when people (and pests) transition into the warmer season. This means barbeques and outdoor fun, but it also signifies that active mosquito and tick populations are on the rise. While these pests can be nuisances, they also have the ability to transmit dangerous diseases. Through this blog, we can help you prepare for summer by banning backyard biting bugs!
The Dangers of Ticks and Mosquitoes
In particular, what makes these two biting pests so bad? Ticks can spread harmful illnesses including Lyme disease, babesiosis, anaplasmosis and the Powassan virus. Mosquitoes, believe it or not, are the deadliest creature in the world! They can spread malaria, dengue fever, West Nile virus, Zika and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. That’s why it’s important to nip both their bites in the bud.
Take Preventative Action
To get ahead of the issue before it has a chance to start, consider our specialized Mosquito & Tick Protection Program™ to protect you, your family and your pets. From the early spring to the end of fall, we’ll assess your home and property to identify any breeding grounds or at-risk areas for mosquitoes and ticks and apply our protection treatments. If you’re an existing member of our MultiPest Plan, we offer a special rate for the treatment.
Other Treatment Measures
If you’re already having an issue with mosquitoes and ticks in your yard, we can apply residual sprays or granules periodically during tick season along the areas where the lawn transitions to woods, as well as in plant beds and garden areas. This will greatly reduce the population of deer ticks and dog ticks around your property. For mosquitoes, our technicians can check your property for breeding and resting locations and apply treatments to greatly remove the incidence of these pests.
In addition to our pest removal options, applying insect repellant is your next best form of defense against bites. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) recommends this five-step method:
- Look for a product containing an active EPA-registered ingredient.
- Read the product label carefully and follow the application instructions.
- Shake and apply on exposed skin about 6 to 8 inches away.
- Spray your hands to apply repellant to face and ears.
- Apply the repellent over your clothing, which should completely cover feet and ankles.
