New England’s summer stingers—yellowjackets, wasps and hornets—are a risk all summer long, but colonies reach their maximum size in late summer. That’s when these pests often become more defensive and aggressive due to increased competition for resources. They pose a threat of serious, potentially life-threatening reactions to humans and animals who are allergic to their venom, but even those without allergies can suffer dire consequences if they are stung repeatedly.
