How to Protect Against Fleas: The Wingless Creatures that Invade Your Home

The end of summer and onset of fall is the height of flea season and pets are often plagued by and carriers of these unwanted wingless creatures. The first wall of defense against a flea infestation is to protect your animals with a flea prevention treatment. For a number of years after products such as Frontline came to market, we received very few calls about fleas in homes. But now, for various reasons, there has been a resurgence in the number of calls we get for fleas in the home.

While using modern treatments for your pets is an excellent idea there is always a possibility that they may carry fleas into your home. Fleas are more than just an itchy annoyance. Their saliva can cause anemia, dermatitis and can transfer dangerous tapeworms in pets. If flea populations get inside the home, these pests can be tough to eradicate.

A common indication that your pet has fleas is repeated scratching and people within an infested home can also experience bites. The good news is that there are ways to keep your home pest free this fall:

  • Check pets’ fur thoroughly for fleas on a regular basis, especially if they have spent time outside
  • Be aware of your pet’s excessive scratching and licking
  • Avoid walking your dog in tall grass and bathe your pets after walks or playtime with other animals
  • Wash pet bedding frequently
  • Vacuum carpets, floors and furniture regularly
  • Speak to your local veterinarian about flea treatment and prevention for your pets

While pets are most often the source of flea problems, these pests can make their way into your home in other ways too: the previous owners of your home had animals who had fleas which were left in the carpets; pests like rats, mice and squirrels can bring fleas in and around your home; and other dogs or cats from your community lounge near your property infesting your house with these creatures.
