Braman offers tips to reduce spider invasions as the weather turns cooler in fall
While spiders can be year-round pests, fall is the time of year when they are on the hunt for a warm, secluded place to build a web and catch their next meal.
Jerry Lazarus, third-generation owner of Braman Termite & Pest Elimination, a leading provider of pest management services across southern New England since 1890, said, “Corners of rooms, windows, basements, attics and garages serve as the perfect refuge for these spiders. Now is a good time to take proper precautions to avoid being spooked by them this fall.”
There are thousands of species of spiders, including hundreds found in New England. While most spiders are harmless and can be considered beneficial because they help control other, less desirable insects, almost all spiders have some type of venom and can bite. Pest-proofing is key to preventing a startling encounter of the eight-legged kind.
Together with the National Pest Management Association, Braman recommends the following spider control tips:
- Vacuuming regularly, including in corners of walls and ceilings and around windows
- Keeping garages, attics and basements clean and clutter-free
- Installing screens and weather stripping on windows and door sweeps on doors
- Fixing cracks in siding and walls, especially where pipes or wires enter the home
- Storing firewood at least 20 feet away from the house
- Inspecting boxes of decorations and grocery bags before bringing them indoors
“Spiders can often find a way into even the best-protected home but taking these steps will greatly reduce your risks of regular encounters,” said Lazarus.
